Until this book, while I am a Gaiman fan, I have not been convinced that he can do anything but related short stories. The critically acclaimed American Gods, for example, was not as inventive as the public believes. Those of us who enjoyed his Sandman series have seen many of these techniques before.
However, this book IS a novel. It holds together with deftly woven subplots, likeable characters, and movement and growth in the characters. Dark sometimes, but mostly multi-faceted, it is an achievement that both Charlie Nancy and Gaiman seem to come into their own at the same time. Finally, a book in which Gaiman’s past enhances his writing, rather than holds him back.
