The first half of this book is very strong. It focuses on young Ashley Asher and her trials in an abusive family, and then her recovery. Very realistic portrayals of the abuser, the codependent mother, and the together family that supports Ashley.
Where the book falls down is a book censorship case, an equally important issue, but one that diminishes the other issue, and is weakened because it seems an afterthought in the plot. Add in all the other problems of all the kids in Ashley’s class, and it seems like the book is being pulled in too many directions.
I would still recommend the book for schools, as I believe it could be very helpful for abuse victims.
