Dostoevsky’s taut psychological style does not serve him well in this book until the very end, which I’m afraid was a bit telegraphed. I like the main character, but shake my head at his continued involvement with the dysfunctional, which doesn’t seem tragic in the end, but seems foolish. Especially as he was presented with good alternatives, I find the ending very disheartening.
