A satisfying take classic orphan writing, a la Oliver Twist. This world is inventive, a slant on Europe in the 16th and 17th centuries. While I usually stay away from books with maps and special vocabulary, this book pulls off a combination of the usual and the unusual that grounds, rather than alienates the reader.
I look forward to Cornish’s next installment in the series.
